Prologue
Growing up I was raised in a castle surrounded by everyone. I had eyes on me constantly. For the first part of my life it was just me and my dad and Marisol before he met mom.
Estelle quickly weaved her way into his heart. She broke down all his walls and barriers. Estelle is the reason I grew up in a castle. She became the queen after a quick fight with the former King, which then brought on one of the greatest wars of all time.
That war brought me so much. It brought me my little brother Phoenix. Now I have a brother and a sister. Mom and dad couldn’t leave Adira all alone so she was practically adopted into the family. In no time our family of three became a family of five. The war took place just days after the birth of my brother Phoenix.
Most importantly the war brought me my mate. I was still too young at the time to realize why I was obsessed with the big scary man but now I know. He was my mate.
Not long after the war mom was pregnant again, this time with a baby sister for us. Araya. After the war, I only saw Alpha Orion a couple of times. The last time was my 15th birthday party. That is until today…
Chapter 1
Today is my 15th birthday. Maybe he will show? I thought to myself. I don’t know why I keep waiting on him. He rarely shows.
“Lilian,” mom yelled from the kitchen. Here goes nothing. The annual birthday breakfast. Every year since she came into our lives we have a big birthday breakfast with all our favorites.
“Coming” I all but yelled back, climbing out of my warm bed and tumbling my way down the stairs and into the dining room. Sure enough there was everybody.
After the war, dad and mom became close to a couple Alphas who I now call my uncles. All of which show up every year on our birthdays. It’s a tradition.
“Wow you look like you just rolled out of bed. I thought you would be happy to see your favorite uncle. But I guess I can take your present away” Uncle Kai laughed putting something back in his pocket.
“Now you know you're not her favorite uncle, right babygirl. Tell him who your favorite uncle is” Mason said laughing. Which caused everybody around the table to laugh.
I couldn’t help but look around the table for him. But he was nowhere to be seen. Shocker. Every year I wait for him and every year I am disappointed.
He stopped showing up after my 8th birthday. I know he still keeps in contact with dad and my uncles because I can hear them whisper about it every now and then. They never talk about him in front of me anymore.
The last time they brought him up, I cried. My heart broke at the thought of me never seeing my prince charming again. At least that's what I called him when I was little. Now not so much.
I can’t help everytime I think about him, tears pour down my face. But I’m done. If he wants to forget me then fine I will do the same. I don’t need him. Soon I will find my mate and forget him all together. I’ll forget the little obsession I had on him.
“Everybody knows my favorite uncle is uncle Cassian” I joke wrapping my arms around Cassian's shoulders. He smirks at both Mason and Kai who sat with their mouths open.
“Watch it, you might catch flies,” Cassian said, placing a gentle kiss on my hands. “Happy birthday Lily”
I smiled before taking my seat next to him. Which was next to Adira who had the widest smile on her face. She lent over and whispered “Happy birthday to the best little sister ever” which caused Araya to yell “Hey” with a frown on her adorable face.
“Happy Birthday to my little angel. Daddy loves you. Soon you’ll be all grown and you’ll leave me with your little sister and brother. Both you and Adira. Please don’t leave me with them. I can’t take it” He joked before getting a slap to the arm from mom.
“I love you baby girl. Marisol will be over with your cake. Uncle Alex will be here by the time the party starts; he has a couple things left to do before the party. He said you shouldn’t miss him too much” dad laughed at the thought. Uncle Alex can be a bit childish. But he isn’t the only one, so is Mason and Kai.
“Let’s eat before it gets cold” Phoenix growled out digging into his food. Shocker. He eats so much, it’s like he is never full. Mom just says it’s because he is a growing boy.
Everybody couldn’t stop laughing. Looking at the table as laughter surrounded me, I was truly happy. This is my family. I would do anything for them. I smiled to myself before digging into my food as well.
Once finished I excused myself while everyone was just chatting with each other and went to my room. Once in there I went straight for the picture on my bedside table and sat on my bed. How can I be so obsessed with a grown man?
He probably found his mate and she didn’t want him to surround himself with a child. Maybe that’s the real reason why he stopped coming here?
Mom and dad just said that things would come up and he couldn't get away. That his pack needs him. He is the Alpha after all. So, I understood the first year or two. but year after year flew by and he never showed his face again.
Sometimes I feel like I smell him, but then I tell myself it's all in my head. When I heard a knock at the door, I quickly put the photo back before standing and making my way to the door.
Chapter 2
I opened the door to find a smiling Adira and araya. I opened it wider and stepped aside to let them in. Once they were both seated on my bed I closed the door.
I walked and sat next to them and grabbed the pillow and leaned my cheek against it. “Maybe this is the year he comes,” Adira said, breaking the silence. She says this every year. I get more and more pathetic. Why do I care so much that he doesn’t show?
“Doubt it” I muttered to myself.
“You never know he could show up and surprise you with a big present,” Araya said, spreading her tiny arm to gesture to how big she is thinking.
“Maybe,” I joked trying to make her feel better. When in reality I knew he wasn’t coming. Why would he?
“So what are you going to wear?” Adira asked. Probably what I normally would.
“I’m going to wear shorts and Uncle Kai’s Tshirt I stole” I smiled thinking about when I stole this.
I was at Uncle Kai pack for the weekend after my 13 birthday. I was upset that he never showed and I couldn’t stop the tears. So Kai said I can come stay with him for the weekend.
I snuck in that night with one of the girls and grabbed one of his shirts. I have had it ever since. He tried taking it away from me when I wore it down to breakfast but I just cried and he let me have it if and I quote “Quit crying or your Orion is going to kill me”
I don’t know who this Orion man is but I didn’t think anything of it. Wrapped in Kai’s shirt made me feel safe.
“What are you going to wear?” I asked, knowing she could find her mate and minute now. She is 17 and at 16 you can find your mate.
“Same as you,” she said raising her eyebrow like mom does when we do something we aren’t supposed to do and we get caught.
/>
“Don’t you want to dress up? You might meet your mate?” I smile innocently.
“Lily everybody coming today came last year” She went to my closet and grabbed a pretty pastel pink sundress.
“You should wear this” she holds it out so I can see.
“Here, dear sis, how about a deal?” I walked up to where she was holding the dress out.
“If I wear this dress you picked out. You have to dress up as well. Meaning a colorful dress not one of your plain black ones” I went to grab the dress when she pulled back.
She looked to Araya who was passed out on the bed wrapped in my blankets. “So if I dress up, you will as well?” She asked to make sure that was the deal.
“Yes”
“You have a deal,” she laughed before handing me the pastel dress.
Chapter 3
I let Araya continue to sleep while I got ready. I went and took a quick shower. Next I blow dried my hair before putting it up in a bun. I put moisturizer on my face, then put on mascara. That's about as far as I go. I’m not the greatest at makeup.
Dad never likes me wearing makeup, he says I’m his baby girl and makeup is for older women. Anytime I would even try he would make me go upstairs and take it off. Muttering under his breath that he doesn’t need war coming to his land.
I never understood. But I am only 15 so I guess that is understandable. They can’t tell me anything. Pack wise, dad always says that I need more training.
Being the first Female Alpha born wolf is hard. Growing up my wolf feels the need to assert her dominance on other wolves who try picking a fight with her.
It was my 12th birthday. It was the most shocking for my mom and dad. They never expected it. They figured I wouldn’t turn till my 16th birthday when I had a chance of finding my mate. But the moon goddess had other plans.
Turning was the most excruciating pain I have ever gone through. Feeling every single bone break and the fur sprouting from my skin. But I wouldn’t change anything.
My wolf Elaine has grown stronger each day. None of the other wolves compare to the strength she holds in one single paw. Always near the surface ready for a fight.
Once I was finished getting ready I walked over to the bed and sat down pulling Araya's head into my lap. “It’s time to wake up, angel,” I said running my fingers through her curly hair.
“5 more minutes,” she moaned out, curling more into me.
“You need to get ready for the party. Unless you don’t want cake” I whispered into her ear. I didn’t react fast enough as her head came slamming into my nose as the crack echoed through the room.
“I’m so sorry." She cried out tear after tear. I just grunted nodding to the door. Mindlinking maci the healer to come to my room. She has to reset my nose quickly or it will permanently be crooked.
less than 5 minutes and Maci comes running into the room stopping when she sees me clutching my nose and blood is running through my fingers. She laughs heavily.
“What happened?” she asked before laughing again when she took my hand away from my face.
“Araya head butted me when I told her if she didn’t get up she won’t get a piece of cake” I huffed out waiting for her to reset it.
“I have to reset it” I just nodded, already knowing what she needed. I braced myself. Counting in my head from 3.
3. 2. 1. as a scream left my throat.
Seconds later a loud growl was heard. Stomping was heard coming up the stairs before the door to my bedroom fell to the floor.
The person standing in front of me shocked me. I never expected to see him anymore. My prince charming. Eyes flickering between black and his green eyes. His wolf is posturing. “What happened?” He growled out. Coming up to me, reaching out to touch me.
Quickly I pulled back. Who does he think he is? “Don’t touch me” I growled out as I wiped away the remaining blood from my nose. “Thank you Maci” I go to the bathroom now to fix myself before I go down stairs. Now I have to change as there is blood on this dress.
Chapter 4
After cleaning myself up I go to my closet to pick out another sundress. This time it's a beautiful green like the eyes of the man I am currently ignoring. I change before opening the door of my closet and stepping back into my room.
There my prince charming still stands. Only this time his hands are in his pockets as he looks around the room. Smiling when he sees a picture of us on my nightstand. I go over to the picture, placing it face down before walking past him to head downstairs.
“Are you just going to ignore me princess?” he asked, following behind me.
“Oh you mean like you have been ignoring me the last 7 years?” I asked.
A growl rumbled deep in his chest. But I could care less. He can’t come back here and act like nothing has happened. That he didn’t ignore me for 7 years. That he stopped showing up. He promised me since my first birthday that he would always show up but he only lasted 2 birthdays before he stopped showing up.
Once I made it down the stairs and into the kitchen I grabbed a water bottle from the fridge. Still he was following behind me.
“Princess,” He growled out once again.
“Stop calling me princess, I'm not 5 anymore” I growled back making sure to show my teeth to him. Which only caused him to smile. Eyes flickering with amusement.
“Little one if I were you I would watch myself.” He said walking passed me. Making sure to brush up against me. Tingles sent shocks up and down my body.
Is he? I thought to myself. No he can’t be can he? I couldn’t have been this lucky? Right?
I stood in the same spot for a couple minutes before Araya came bounding into the room. “I’m so sorry lily. I didn’t mean to hurt you” She wrapped her arms around my legs.
“It’s okay angel, I’m okay see?” I said motioning to my face that doesn’t even show a bruise.
Chapter 5
“Let's go get some cake. How about that?” I said looking down at her to see the big smile on her face.
“YES!!” she screamed, running away from me and to the backyard where mom and dad were chatting with my prince charming.
I just smiled and followed after her. I was stopped by uncle Kai who spun me around. “Happy birthday to my little angel.” I couldn’t stop laughing. Every year he spins me around like I'm 6 again.
“You do know I’m not a little girl anymore right?” I chuckled before walking away only for him to yell…
“You’ll always be my little angel no matter how big you get!” Causing everyone around us to laugh. Except one. He just growled. I felt butterflies in my stomach as the growl reverberated throughout the backyard.
I looked up only for my eyes to find him already staring at me. I saw my father nudge him. But still he never broke eye contact with me.
Maybe he is my mate after all. Could I really be that lucky to have him as my mate. My prince charming. The man I was pretty much obsessed with since I was little? Maybe I am just picturing it all wrong?
“Cake time” Mom yelled, breaking the awkward silence. I heard Araya yell before running to the table and sitting in her normal spot which is beside me and Adira. As I turned to walk to the table I still felt his eyes on me. Following wherever I go.
One would think this is creepy in any other instance. However, if my wolf is correct, he is my mate. But I won’t know for sure till my 16th birthday next year. Hopefully I am correct.
However, at the sametime I wish I was wrong. If he is in fact my mate, he is 10 years older than me. Maybe he is just waiting for me to find out he is my mate so he can reject me and mate with someone his age? I couldn’t stop thinking as I sat down.
I didn’t notice that he sat in front of me. I smiled as I looked around the table. I noticed one person missing. Adira was missing. Nowhere to be seen. I turned to look at mom who just shook her head, mindlinking me that we will talk about it later.
Maybe a minute has passed when Marisol brought out a beautiful chocolate cake. I couldn’t help myself. I was giddy. I sure do love Marisol's baking. Marisol lit the candles and they all began to sing the happy birthday song. I smiled when I saw Adira coming to sit next to me. “Happy Birthday Lilian”
